West Frankfort's haunted house began in 2003. President Tara Fasol  rounded up some friends for an impromptu haunted house for charity with proceeds going to the families of two young girls who had been diagnosed with cancer. That year the event was held at the Old City Hall facility, now the Old Firehouse Event Center, and $800 was banked towards their goodwill efforts.

The next year, a committee was formed and the group, under the name "Haunted West Frankfort" worked again to present a haunted house for charity. That year $10,000 was raised and allocated to a number of various organizations.

The next three years the group continued to grow and change. The haunted house was held in 2005 at Frankfort Community Park, 2006 at the abandoned UMWA Hospital, 2007 Orient No. 2 Coal Mine (location of the Dec. 21, 1951 mine disaster), and 2008 at the Frankfort Community Park.

Over the years, the group has made a tradition to purchase thousands of dollars worth of turkey for the Crosswalk Community Action Agency Food Pantry at Thanksgiving, complete with all the fixings. The team purchases the groceries and hand delivers the goods in an effort to promote community service and volunteerism.

Donations are also made Franklin County Animal Control, Court Appointed Special Advocates of Franklin County, Relay for Life of Franklin County, United Way, Bruce and Rick's Baskets and Jackets coat donation program, Shop with a Cop of West Frankfort, Senior Star program with Salvation Army, Illinois Fan Club (providing fans to elderly and disabled), and many others including individual donations to help cover the costs of medical bills, medical travel expenses, fire victim relief funds, and funeral expenses for low-income families.

The team now consists for a multi-person committee and over 50 volunteers, comprised of community members and high school students.

In 2009, the committee changed the name to SCARE Association in an effort to better network the many community events that had grown to be a part of the Haunted West Frankfort calendar.
